Yigo, Guam

April & May 2025

Dr. Amber represented World Tails in a two-month partnership with G.A.I.N. (Guam Animals in Need) at the Guam SNIP Clinic, a high-volume sterilization initiative addressing the island’s severe pet overpopulation crisis.

Despite being only 212 square miles, Guam is home to an estimated 70,000–84,000 free-roaming dogs and cats, many unowned and vulnerable to injury, disease, and neglect. As the island’s only animal shelter, G.A.I.N. cares for over 5,000 animals annually, often operating at full capacity with limited resources.

During the campaign, Dr. Amber performed over 600 spay and neuter surgeries on owned pets, free-roaming animals, and shelter residents. She also provided critical assistance during a hoarding case, helping stabilize dozens of neglected animals in urgent need of care.

This collaboration provided immediate relief to Guam’s most at-risk animals and advanced G.A.I.N.’s mission to humanely reduce the stray population through sterilization and community outreach.

Helping Horses
Belmopan, Belize

January 2024

While working on Ambergris Caye, Belize, Dr. Amber was contacted by a horse owner from the mainland facing a desperate situation: two young horses were suffering from rapidly growing fibroblastic sarcoid tumors on their legs. Acting quickly, Dr. Amber performed surgery to remove the tumors and prevent further progression.

Each horse was carefully anesthetized, and the tumors were excised and cauterized to destroy remaining tumor cells, minimizing the risk of recurrence. Both horses are expected to make a full recovery.

Dr. Amber’s swift response and skilled care reflect World Tails’ commitment to improving animal health and welfare — wherever help is needed most.

Sea Turtle treated by Dr. Amber in Belize

Loggerhead Turtle Rescue
Ambergris Caye, Belize

November 2023

There’s never a dull moment in veterinary medicine. Late one afternoon, a massive male loggerhead turtle was brought in as an emergency after a suspected boat propeller strike. He was in grave condition — gasping for air, missing a hind flipper, and covered in deep lacerations. Sadly, his trachea was irreparably damaged, and despite every effort by Dr. Amber and her team, he could not be saved.

Some days in this profession are heartbreakingly difficult. Yet even in loss, the work matters — your donations help ensure that every animal, owned or wild, receives compassion and care when it’s needed most.

Spay/Neuter Campaign
Lviv, Ukraine

August 2023 | October 2023 | April 2024

The conflict in Ukraine has impacted not only humans but also animals. Dr. Amber proudly represented World Tails in Ukraine as part of the Greater Good Charities' "Good Fix" team. Through their collaborative efforts, the team successfully completed three clinics, providing vital services to over 2,100 cats and dogs. These services included safe sterilization, vaccination, microchipping, and parasite treatment, ensuring a healthier future for these animals.

This remarkable achievement was made possible thanks to our invaluable ground partner, Home Of Rescued Animals who have recused numerous animals of all species from war-torn conditions. Their unwavering support and dedication were crucial in making these clinics a reality.

Together, we have made a significant impact on animal welfare in Ukraine, and we look forward to continuing this important work in the future.

Belgian Malinois Working Dog in Angola, Africa

Remote Veterinary Assistance
Waco Kungo, Angola, Africa

January 2023 to July 2023

Dr. Amber's husband, Chris, was engaged in a working dog security contract in Waco Kungo, Angola, a notably remote area with no access to veterinary care. The contract involved three working canines, and the isolation of their location posed significant challenges for their well-being.

To address any medical issues that arose with the dogs, Dr. Amber utilized telemedicine, offering remote consultations and guidance to manage their health concerns. Being a working dog is dangerous! During this period each of the canines sustained some type of injury.  One suffered severe injuries when her front leg was caught in a steel hunting trap. The other two sustained injuries to their legs while in pursuit of a suspects.

World Tails covered all treatment costs for these injuries, thanks to the generous donations from our supporters. This support allowed us to provide critical care to the dogs despite the remote location and challenging circumstances.

This collaboration marked another meaningful milestone for World Tails — a testament to the power of teamwork, compassion, and shared commitment to improving animal welfare, one campaign at a time.

Supporting Chimpanzee Welfare
Cameroon, Africa

May & June 2022

Dr. Amber embarked on a vital and challenging mission deep within the remote rainforests of northern Cameroon, working alongside local communities to improve the health and welfare of rescued chimpanzees living in a sanctuary. The mission centered on training local veterinarians, empowering them with advanced medical and surgical skillsessential for the long-term care of these endangered animals.

In addition to the training, Dr. Amber led the restoration and revitalization of the sanctuary’s veterinary clinic and laboratory — overseeing critical repairs, deep cleaning, and the restocking of essential medical equipment and supplies.

Through these efforts, World Tails strengthened the sanctuary’s capacity to deliver high-quality veterinary care, creating a safer, healthier environment for the chimpanzees and those dedicated to protecting them.

Emaciated dog being treated in Qatar
Dog recovered after being treated for almost dying

Saving Xena
Doha, Qatar

December 2020

While working in Qatar, Dr. Amber encountered one of the most heartbreaking cases of her career — a severely ill street dog brought in by a kind passerby. Emaciated, cold, and covered in parasites, the dog was near death. With no owner to fund her care, euthanasia seemed inevitable. Yet the spark in her eyes showed she hadn’t given up.

Using World Tails funds, Dr. Amber chose to fight for her life. She named the dog Xena, after the warrior princess, and began intensive treatment. With warmth, food, and round-the-clock care, Xena slowly regained her strength — transforming from frail and hopeless to bright-eyed and thriving.

With help from Maria Garcia Alcalde, who supported her recovery and found her a loving home, Xena’s story ended in joy. Today, she’s healthy, happy, and living proof of how compassion and determination can change a life.

Through World Tails’ swift action and dedication, every one of these dogs made a full transformation — from suffering and neglect to healthy, happy pets with loving forever homes. This mission exemplified the heart of World Tails’ work: turning despair into hope, one life at a time.
